Koenigstein Fortress is located in the hills of Saxon Switzerland. It’s home to the oldest preserved barracks in Germany, the deepest well in Saxony, the first Saxon garrison church and a replica of Augustus the Strong’s legendary giant barrel. The impregnable »Bastille of Saxony« once kept the porcelain inventor, Johann Friedrich Boettger, from being approached by other princes. The fortress was also a dreaded prison for prominent people such as August Bebel and Frank Wedekind. The climb to the top is made so much easier with an elevator and panoramic lift. Some of the attractions at Koenigstein Fortress include the exhibition »IN LAPIDE REGIS – On the King’s Stone«, numerous events, guided tours, hands-on activities, themed culinary experiences, space for weddings and other events, and holiday apartments.
